Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative. The four men must make an impossible moral decision in the mountains of Afghanistan that leads them into an enemy ambush. As they confront unthinkable odds, the SEALs must find reserves of strength and resilience to fight to the finish.

Brutal and intense, writer-director Peter Berg’s superb combat film, based on the vivid New York Times bestselling tale of heroism, takes a look at the 19 American deaths – and lone survivor – of an ill-fated incident in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

Bloody and poetic, the incredible true story follows four Navy SEALS on a secret mission to kill a Taliban leader when they stumble across a trio of goat herders. The SEALS choose the difficult decision to release and not kill them. That act of mercy is rewarded by a relentless firestorm from at least forty Taliban fighters who quickly surround the four.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3D

Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder has an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This is certainly one of the years most exciting movies, and one of the most entertaining too, I think in terms of bringing these characters to the big screen again after all these years they have done a top notch job, you will always get haters no matter what always trying to spoil the fun so don’t listen, I’m not a massive fan of the franchise and watched this with lower expectations but totally loved it for what it is, you don’t need to look at it as just a kids movie anymore, just enjoy it as a stand alone action sci-fi fantasy, this is a darker and more realistic vision of what these characters should be like due more to the fact the effects now make them look so much more like actual mutant turtles and they look badass, the action is great, some a little over the top but that’s to be expected.

The World of Ice & Fire

The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones
(A Song of Ice and Fire)
The cover is all thick and squishy like some old leather-bound tome. The illustrations are gorgeous and there is way more information about the world of Game of Thrones than anyone ever needed to know. If you can’t wait for The Winds of Winter to come out, this is a great book to hold you over. It is rather large, I would definitely be willing to call it a “coffee table” book. I flipped through and noticed that there is greater detail to the histories referenced in the books and house lines. This would be a fantastic addition to a collection for any fan of the series, and based on my man’s reaction I would say it’s well worth the price.

Maleficent

Maleficent is a remake of the Disney classic “Sleeping Beauty.” By far, this is the best Disney movie I’ve seen and one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Everything is just right. For example, the music sets the right mood in every scene. It is strong and loud when it needs to be and quite and shy at other times and, at certain points, it is playful and happy. It really pulls the whole movie together. Along with the jaw-dropping music, this movie has amazing actors starting with Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning (Aurora). They fit each role perfectly almost as if they were born for these roles. The movie was magnificent in story line, acting, and computer graphic imaging (CGI).

Divergent

“Divergent” is the story of Beatrice (Tris) Prior, a young lady living in futuristic Chicago. Due to post-war effects, their society is divided into 5 factions that represent 5 virtues – Abnegation (selflessness/service to others), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (peace) and Erudite (knowledge/learning). Those who do not belong to a faction (basically, ostracized from society) are called “factionless.” When they come of age, they attend a ceremony to select the faction they will join for the rest of their lives. Most choose the faction they are born in, while others may “defect.” During the pre-ceremony aptitude test, Beatrice is told that her test results were “inconclusive”, meaning she doesn’t see to belong to a specific group. They call this “Divergent.” Their society views “Divergents” as dangerous so Beatrice must keep this secret to protect her life. When she chooses her faction, she meets her new mentor and trainer Four and the brutal Eric and forms friendships with other new initiates Christina, Will and Al. The physical and mental training (think “boot camp”) is intensive and challenging and Tris needs to find a way to survive. She eventually finds an ally in Four, who isn’t quite what he seems.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

This film picks up where the last one leaves off. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is recruited to be the face of the rebellion. She is reluctant until it becomes personal. Happy content people don’t pick fights. The film consists of a propaganda war between Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and the government and Katniss and the rebels/terrorists/anarchists/freedom fighters.
The story centers around the idea of putting on a massive Public Relations campaign to rise up against the capitol. Don’t get me wrong, I realize the importance of motivating the masses when it comes to warfare in any form but they could have renamed this movie “How the cast of Mad Men would run a war.” I’m imagining a massively popular video parody as I sit here. This is a weakness inherited from the novel but it seems to be final proof that there was just nowhere left for the author to go.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

If you liked the first film, then you’re not going to be disappointed by How to Train Your Dragon 2. Written and directed by Dean DeBlois (who co-directed and co-wrote the first film and also gave us Lilo & Stitch), this film if anything actually raises the very high bar set by the first film. The same creative team is behind it and they’ve matched and at times even surpassed themselves. The animation is superb and even more textured this time around, and the 3D – which was dazzling in the first – is even more breath-taking in the flying sequences

Five years have passed since we last saw Berk, and all of our characters are five years older. The film opens with what has become the new big sport in Berk – dragon racing. As always, Hiccup is marching (or dragon-riding anyway, with Toothless) to a different drummer, obsessed with exploring and mapping everything that lies beyond the known frontiers of Berk.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

DAYS OF FUTURE PAST has a perfectly convoluted plot that unites the X-Men universes of the first three movies and Matthew Vaughn’s FIRST CLASS which was set back in the early 1960’s. Thus we have Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan back as the originals, along with their earlier counterparts, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, in the roles of Professor X and Magneto. The movie begins in a hellish future ruled by the Sentinels, killing machines capable of hunting down anyone with even slightest trace of the mutant gene, where there is a handful of surviving mutants led by a now reconciled Professor X and Magneto.

They devise a plan that calls for Kitty Pryde to use her power to send Wolverine’s consciousness back into his 1973 body and then try to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, the inventor of the Sentinels. It is Mystique’s capture following this crime that allows the Sentinel makers to use her DNA to build indestructible machines capable of neutralizing any mutant’s power. But back in the Vietnam era 70’s, with its lava lamps and water beds, Wolverine has his work cut out for him: Charles Xavier is a bitter alcoholic living in the now shuttered Xavier Institute (under the care of Hank McCoy/Beast) and Magneto is imprisoned below the Pentagon for killing JFK (there is a nice twist on this later).

The best part of this is that it puts Hugh Jackman’s Logan back front and center in the story as he goes about getting Xavier to care again and busting Magneto out of his cell so they can rewrite history and save the future.
